Mitigating Risk Series: The Health Foundation

At the end of the year, most of our clients sit down or Zoom with their wealth advisors for their financial reviews to mitigate risk. However, addressing health risks is equally vital. It starts with a strong health foundation:

  • Make sure you have the right primary care physician. This is the gateway to better healthcare. Your doctor should be accessible, empathetic, communicative, available, and have comprehensive knowledge and expertise.

  • Faithfully go to your annual checkups. They provide early detection of health issues and are an effective way to monitor and manage chronic conditions like hypertension. They provide an opportunity for preventative care and immunizations, discussing age-appropriate screenings like cholesterol tests, colonoscopies, and shingles vaccines.

  • Your medical records need to be accessible. This allows improved coordination of care with your providers, including your PCP, any specialists that you might need, and hospitals you might be admitted to.  It prevents medical errors and puts you in charge of your health.

  • Have an emergency plan in place.  In an emergency, time is of the essence. You need a plan that includes emergency contacts, takes into account personalized needs like allergies, contact information for all of your healthcare providers, as well as your preferred hospital—not just the closest one.

  • Connect all of your advisors. Connections are everything; otherwise, things fall through the cracks. This means not just your healthcare providers, but your wealth advisor, and your legal advisor.

  • Have the right insurance. Great insurance gives you access to great healthcare. Every year, always make sure your PCP and your go-to hospital are covered because coverage often changes.

An expert healthcare advisor can ensure that all of the above are covered. They can help orchestrate care, connect your advisors and physicians, closely examine your healthcare insurance, and more. Because the best way to ensure a healthy life is to mitigate risk in the first place.
